Dakota Access Pipeline coverage

I sat down with Lenard Monkman, a founder at Red Rising Magazine and an associate producer at CBC Indigenous, to talk about why Dakota Access Pipeline protests are not being covered by mainstream media. We touched on how news treats indigenous people, the history of treaties, and how online news can allow for information bubbles for people to inhabit.

The way people get their information is rapidly changing. I’ve seen more coverage of #NoDAPL protests from Facebook Lives than from CBC, Global, or the Winnipeg Free Press. Alternative media outlets like Democracy Now! and Unicorn Riot are some of the few with journalists on the ground. And these journalists are routinely being arrested.

The military and state police are acting against the water protectors at Standing Rock. Multiple arrests are happening. Armed cops and military personnel are getting violent. And yet large news outlets in the USA and in Canada aren’t covering the issue. Here we ask why in many ways.
